Harold Clifton Fithian was born, raised, and schooled in southern California.  He had an interest in many different art forms, including acting, music, and jewelry-making.

In the 1920s Fithian worked on the back lot of Universal Studios and studied acting with lifetime friend and acting coach, Edna Ames.

In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, Fithian became involved in social justice issues and later, in the 1940s, traveled with Woody Guthrie, Will Geer, Herta Ware, and Gordon Orme on union-organizing activities, including those for the farm workers of California's San Joaquin Valley.

Fithian Tribal Design Cufflinks

In the early 1950s, Fithian began making hand-crafted men's jewelry including cufflinks, tie bars, tie tacks, belt buckles, and key chains. Marks include “Fithian Sterling” and “fi sterling,” the latter mark being first registered in 1954. He produced jewelry throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s.
